There’s nobody where you are, and you’re right here.
Many communities across Ontario have no local IBCLC lactation support. If you are an experienced IBCLC with advanced skills and credentials, and you have wished you could do something about that where you live, this is the arrangement we would like to offer you.
Everything on this page is the arrangement itself, including the parts that cost you something. Read the second half before you decide it sounds good. What we are trying to do.
What you get
A practice, without building one.
Your own schedule
Our IBCLCs make their own schedules. The family-friendly one we recommend has you off for stat holidays, weekends, evenings, the New Year break, March Break and summer Fridays.
Three ways to see families
In person, virtually, and home visits in your area if you want to offer them. Virtual is how a clinician in one town reaches a family in the next one that has nobody.
Families who can afford you
Our IBCLCs reduce the financial barrier for local families with OHIP-subsidized rate consults. A valid referral is required for the subsidized rate.
The clinic behind you
Booking, admin, referrals, the physicians and a collective of colleagues doing the same work. The OBC is designed to plug in wherever there is a need, so you are not inventing a clinic from scratch.
What we ask
The terms, before you apply.
None of this is a surprise waiting for you at an interview. If any of it is a dealbreaker, better to know now than after we have both spent an afternoon.
You are responsible for your own rent and supplies.
The work is weekdays in business hours. Clinic hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, closed on stat holidays. After-hours appointments are voluntary, at your discretion and ours.
Part time is generally 2 to 3 weekdays a week, full time 4 to 5.
Some of it has to be in person: at least 1 business day a week part time, at least 2 full time. We encourage home visits.
Every visit is charted electronically, so you need to be comfortable with a laptop, tablet or phone, the internet, and typing at speed while you work.
Building healthy futures together
The gap is the whole point.
The Ontario Breastfeeding Clinic exists to put lactation support where there is a gap in funded service, especially rural and underserved communities held back by money or distance. An IBCLC who already lives in one of those places is the most direct answer to that there is.
