You’re booked. Here’s what happens next.

Congratulations on the baby, and thanks for booking with the Ontario Breastfeeding Clinic. There isn’t much to do before we meet, and none of it is hard.

Before we meet

Four things, and none of them take long.

  1. Read your Thanks for Booking email. It has the office address and parking, or your link for a virtual visit, or what we need to plan a home visit.
  2. Bring a support person if you’d like one there.
  3. Have any feeding tools or supplies you use, or have questions about, within reach.
  4. It helps if your baby is ready to eat when we start.

If that email isn’t in your inbox, check Promotions and Junk.

If we’re not meeting in the office

A little setup, only where it helps.

A virtual visit

All of it is about us seeing the latch.

  • Fill in your intake form as soon as you can. It’s how we prepare for your consult
  • A laptop, a phone stand, or a helper holding the camera makes your position and latch much easier for us to see.
  • On appointment day we email you a link before the appointment. If it isn’t in your inbox, check Promotions and Junk.
  • Have your device charged or plugged in, and take it off battery saver.

A home visit

We’re coming to you, so we need two things.

  • Fill in your intake form as soon as you can. It’s how we get your address and plan your consultant’s day.
  • Keep your ringer on. She may need to call, and it will come from a blocked or private number.
  • Consult time may change based on your location, and your IBCLC’s location that day. We will be in touch if we need to adjust the time. Please allow a bit of additional time for unexpected traffic/weather delays.

The Consult itself

What we’ll actually do.

Your first consult with baby

We start with your health history and your baby’s, then work out what to do next. Depending on your goals for the consult that means more comfortable positions, help with latch or milk supply, how to get more sleep while still feeding at night, or other support.

A follow-up

What’s new, what’s working, what’s not? Tell us your goal for the visit and we plan the next bit together. Feeding in a carrier, breastsleeping, dream feeding and nighttime parenting, starting solids, going back to work, nursing while pregnant, tandem nursing, multiples, weaning. New pain, latch trouble, supply worries, teething, spitting up, a fussy baby: any of it is reason enough.

A baby is never too old for a follow-up. Toddler and big kid visits are welcome too.

A prenatal consult or class

A good start with breastfeeding, chestfeeding, pumping and bottles. How do I prepare? How will I know if my baby is getting enough? How often should they feed? How do I express milk? You’ll get the answers, and lose a few myths on the way.

Only if you want the subsidized rate

You don’t need a referral to be seen.

We won’t make your baby wait for a fax. Once requested, if your referral doesn’t arrive in time you are welcome to keep your consult with the IBCLC at the same rate as the OHIP copay while we wait for the paperwork.

New health card? Tell us as soon as you can, so we bill OHIP and not you. Email the two letters at the end of the number, or send a photo of the card.

A valid referral is not required for IBCLC support, but is a requirement for MD support and access to OHIP subsidized rates. We can help you get one.

Something changed

Tell us as early as you can.

Are things going sideways? We want to help! Contact us for a sooner appointment, reschedule to another time or cancel an appointment. Change and cancellation fees may apply, and the earlier you tell us the more likely somebody else can use the time.

If it’s a question rather than a change, the FAQ is usually the fastest answer.

We’re looking forward to meeting you and your baby.

Warmly, the Ontario Breastfeeding Clinic team. If you still need to book something, it’s all here.
